"I'm here, just like every day." Her pale eyelids remained closed, shielding her from the cruel reality of the world. I longed to see her beautiful eyes, shining with love and warmth, but they remained hidden from me. Unfazed, I continued talking to her, sharing stories and memories, as if hoping my voice could reach her unconscious mind.

Her words warmed my heart, and I stood to hold her hand, but she stepped back. "What happened?" I asked with desperation. "Let's go together." “No. If I come back with you, you won’t be able to escape the darkness,” she said with a sad smile. “And besides, I’m the part of you that you want gone.” I looked at her in confusion, but before I could say anything, an invisible force pulled me away. A sharp jolt of pain shot through my body, and my eyes snapped open. The light above was blinding, and I quickly shut my eyes again, feeling a tear slip down my cheek.

She’s beginning to slip away from me. This time she slipping away from me, not in a dramatic, shouting or storming-out kind of way but rather in a quiet, aching, day-by-day kind of way. It’s the kind that gets harder to stop. This kind feels permanent. She returns back home but it’s been hours already. I’m sitting on the couch, pretending that I’m reading but I actually not even turning a single page. The moment the door opens, I look up. Again, She avoids my eyes.

I am not going to forget it till my last breath. When I opened my eyes, her beauty caught my breath away, and my heart skipped a beat. Her face turned into a bright shade of red, and her lips looked more kissable than ever in this deep shade of pink, which made it hard for me to stop myself from kissing the hell out of her. I was in a daze looking at her like this when a tear slipped from her eye, which scared me. I agree with her points but, it was too much for me. Taking her things, she turned her back on me, having no idea if she left, she would take my soul along. Hastily closing the gap, I held her arms from behind. “All of it is screaming in my mind. I can’t stay here anymore. I am leaving.” She whispered with tears coming to her eyes as well. Closing my eyes, the tears rolled down my cheek as my fingers declined to my firm grip on her. She remained motionless when I leaned down, nuzzling to her ears.

She felt her eyes closing as her consciousness slowly started to drift away. She didn’t know if it was her desperate mind coming up with a trick to console her troubled heart but she heard a familiar voice laced with anger and the sounds of feet running towards her as her eyes finally closed.

Submission or escape. The words had haunted her dreams, flickering like a neon sign. She stared at the ceiling now, the faint glow of the city pressing against her blinds, her chest tight. What did escape even mean anymore? Deleting the number? Pretending none of it had happened? Going back to nights of leftovers and silence? She rolled onto her side, hugging her pillow. She remembered his voice, low and steady, slipping under her skin like heat. She remembered the way her body responded — how alive she’d felt.

She whispers, walking back, and I squeeze her hand, shaking my head. “I’m glad I met you too, Shayla Hart.” She pulls her hand back and whispers goodbye and walks away from me for the last time. I watch as she disappears out the front entrance and I sigh, closing my eyes, my heart slowly sinking to the pit of my stomach. “Goodbye”
