Not even in slumber. As she began to inch away, her heartbeat quickening with each cautious step, my eyes snapped open. Instinct, fueled by the desire to possess her, screamed at me to act, to seize her before she could flee. But I remained still, my lips curving into a cruel smile as I watched her attempt to escape. 'How foolish she is,' I thought, the amusement tinged with a darker satisfaction. She had no idea what I was capable of—no idea that every breath she took, every step she made, was as loud to me as a shout in the dead of night.

In fact, she couldn’t think of a better way to cheer herself up, so she broke into a jog, forgetting about embarrassments in front of boys she liked; smelly strange men and unreliable imaginary friends. She spread her arms into wings. Hopped onto the ice, feet flat, legs flexed for balance. She closed her eyes and slid, the winter air burning her cheeks. For just a second, her troubles faded. Things were good. Right now, they were good. “Hey, baby cakes! What’s shakin?”

I want to tell her how gorgeous she looks and how she takes my breath away every single time I see her but I am unable to form any coherent words. As if on cue, we lean in towards each other, eyes fluttering shut in anticipation before the loud sound of sirens command our attention and we break apart. To my chagrin, my beloved starts to slowly fade. I try to grab her but it's too late, she's already half gone and just offers me a small smile as she completely disappears. The stupid siren is still blaring and I look around to see where it is coming from only to find myself in....my room?

As my eyes were still on her, she decided to slowly move back, into the dark depths of the forest. As she disappeared into the dark I found my eyes too heavy to keep them open any more and finally I closed them again wishing this was one hellish nightmare and nothing more.

Breaking away, I took a deep breath as i tried to pull away but he held me still, worry struck across his features as he looked at me, "Don't leave me." He shook his head, "I can't stand and watch you leave-" I brought my finger to his lips shushing him, interrupting his next words. "Close your eyes." I said. A frown formed between his eyebrows, "Cara-" "Just close them." I said, he looked confused before his eyelids slowly dropped down. A smile crossed my lips as i recalled a moment we once shared. "Forget the ten years thing. Just imagine you were asleep and you woke up-" I started, "What's the first thing you see ?"

Or had this brought back something darker? Some buried memory she wasn’t ready to face? I stayed still, letting her hold on not for once, I didn’t pull away. When the plane finally leveled in the air, the tension in her body slowly eased. She opened her eyes carefully, blinking like someone waking from a nightmare. Then she seemed to realize what she was doing. Her hand slipped from mine instantly. She wiped at her tears, avoiding my gaze. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. I said nothing Only cleared my throat and turned to look out the window, watching the clouds stretch endlessly beyond the glass.

The world started fading, my vision darkening at the edges. I fought to stay awake, to keep looking at her. But I couldn’t. Everything slipped away, the last thing I saw being her face, before the darkness took me completely.

It felt like a tear slipped out and disappeared beneath the cold surface where no one could see it, and then the life slipped away from her gaze. She drifted farther and farther away from me until she became just a small dot in my sight, and then disappeared forever.
