My future was more important than the will of some unknown force. I sped away in the direction of the construction site I had sent to Rory days earlier. The place was eerily quiet, I could hear the hum of electricity through the wiring in the partially finished walls. I glanced at the clock on my phone, I had about thirty minutes before Rory would arrive with the defibrillator and any medical equipment she had deemed necessary for my resuscitation. Plenty of time to find an easily accessible live wire inside the building I had chosen to die in. Footsteps echoed behind me just as I found a bundled of exposed wires and pulled them from the wall. “You’re early!” I called over my shoulder.

I couldn't imagine what might happen if something went wrong at that event. I never expected this. Arianna had stolen everything from me, and still, it wasn't enough for her. Her fingers hammered against the phone, the sharp tapping echoing her irritation. [Say something. Don't act like you're dead.] [If you don't want it, then return it.] Those cold, cutting words dragged me back to that bone-chilling night in the snow. I wanted to tell her that I was already dead—that I had frozen to death in the cheap down jacket she bought me. Winter in the north is brutally cold. So cold that, after failing to secure a hospital bed, I merely closed my eyes for a moment—and never opened them again.

"Fiona, I know you're hurting, but you have to pull yourself together. From the clues we have, Ivy's last note is the key. You need to tell us what it said." I was on the verge of breaking down. I grabbed my head and screamed. "I don't know! I really don't know!" If I could, I'd do anything to find out what Ivy wrote. Why did my father and grandmother both kill themselves after reading it?
