I said quietly, “I lose everything. My marriage, my honor, my place in this family, my heart, my soul, my love. Do you understand what that means? I’ll be the fool prince who couldn’t even keep his wife.” She stared at me, tears falling silently. “Then be the fool. It’s better than being the villain.” The word hit me like a blade to the chest. Villain. Was that what I’d become? Maybe it was. Because as I looked at her, broken, defiant, beautiful, I realized I didn’t care anymore. If being the villain was the only way to stay in her story, then I would play the part gladly. I reached for her again, my hand trembling not with anger this time, but despair.
