Khael’s lips part as if to speak, but it’s Vastian who says it first.
“The Hollow is showing you,” he calls through the downpour. “Its will is stronger than any of us.”
His voice isn’t cruel. It’s reverent. Like he’s in awe of the land’s response to me.
I shake my head, hair flying, mud splattering across my chest. “THIS ISN’T FREEDOM,” I scream. “THIS IS A FUCKING CAGE!”
Lightning cracks above us.
My legs buckle slightly, slipping deeper into the sludge. I catch myself, one hand skimming the earth to stay upright. It feels alive beneath my palm—pulsing, warm despite the rain.
