The urge to respond immediately rose sharp and impatient, a pull she recognized and distrusted in equal measure, the kind of impulse that led to saying things you couldn’t take back or revealing things you’d meant to keep private.
She waited.
Waiting was a discipline she trusted more than impulse. Impulse was what got people into trouble, made them say things they couldn’t take back, exposed vulnerabilities they’d meant to keep private, turned careful boundaries into rubble. Waiting gave you time to think, to calibrate, to make sure the thing you were about to say was actually the thing you meant, that it wouldn’t betray more than you intended.
