I stepped inside, quietly, but she sensed me anyway. She stiffened before she turned to face me, eyes wide and guarded.
“Damien?” Her voice was soft, but her heartbeat betrayed her—racing, nervous, alert. She hid the book as if I hadn’t already seen the title.
“Ancient bloodlines?” I asked, arching a brow.
She swallowed, fingers curling around the edges of the book defensively. “It’s nothing.”
A lie, a terrible one. I moved closer, slower, deliberate steps. Her chest rose and fell faster with each one.
