"My Alpha is showing you mercy. More mercy than you deserve." My stomach twisted at the warning hidden in his voice. Mercy? I scoff inwardly. What's mercy? Death sounds fucking preferable to the mess I'm living in. What does he know about mercy, anyway? Mercy by treating me like trash? Like I don't exist? Like I'm some fucking tool he can use and toss aside whenever he feels like it? Is that what mercy is supposed to mean now? I didn't back down. I squared my shoulders, feeling every inch of anger, heartbreak, and betrayal burning just beneath my skin.

Her father avoided her gaze altogether, burying himself in his Bible. Amara sang, but her voice trembled. The hymn that once gave her comfort, Great is Thy Faithfulness, now pressed against her chest like an accusation. She clutched the book tighter, tears prickling behind her eyes. Every word about mercy and grace rang hollow when her own family’s love felt conditional.

I add a few more words to my petition, asking for my confusion to be erased because the Lord is the God of comfort, not of confusion. He will guide me. He will guide my wandering and chaotic heart. He will give me peace, that I know for sure and I know I will end up achieving it because my God is the most merciful and the most compassionate. He is like that father who rejoices even when his son comes back, using his money on sinful things. He rejoices because his son who was led astray has found his way back to his father and it is enough for him that his son has repented.

I can't seem to do anything right. Dad continued gazing at me from the photograph, his smile unchanged. I knew I could never receive his response or forgiveness again. My heart spasmed painfully, and I braced myself against the ground with my arms. "I know you must both be so angry with me. Adrian is as well. I'm selfish and stupid. Grace doesn't have to do that, I came to implore for help and not take gratitude. The moon gave me a route to run away from the promise that might not be retained forever. Within the moonbow, I felt there was no hope of healing the shattered essence of an individual.
