She'd barely slept in days — Rose's ear infections, the stress of Catherine's lawsuit, the emotional weight of yesterday's vow renewal. She deserved at least this one morning. The text was three words. Turn on news. NOW. He slipped into the hallway and opened the news app. The headline loaded, and the floor disappeared beneath him.

Heaving out another sigh, Abigail placed the phone on her nightstand facing down and carried a passed out Joshua to his crib in Elizabeth’s room. I clutched the couch tighter, my legs wobbling, as the newscaster’s voice filled the room.

Jess’s POV. The day went by in the blink of an eye as the servants prepared the dinner for the night. It was 6 p.m. now, and Dione was to be here by 7. I stood in front of my closet, unable to pick out a good outfit for the night.

Now, her pulse quickened as she reached for the door handle. “Come in.” The voice came from inside. Her spine straightened. She hadn’t even knocked. Eden opened the door.
