I snapped at her and she sighed, massaging the bridge of her nose. "I made him promise me not to tell you. My phone suddenly rang and I sighed, thinking it would be either Athena or Lara. I walked to the counter in front of the mirror and glanced at the screen.

I shouted, grabbing his arm and trying to pull him back, but he felt like a statue made of hot iron. "He touched you, Fantine, and he’s standing in my space like he has a right to be here," Riley growled, and I could see his fingernails lengthening into claws while his eyes turned that terrifying shade of electric blue. "I don't care, let him go before you get suspended, and think about the headlines tomorrow if you don't calm down this second," I pleaded, but inside, I felt a rush of power seeing him lose his mind over me, because it meant the bond was working exactly the way I needed it to.

“You saw him. You know. Now you need to breathe. Let yourself feel it… but not like this. Not consumed. Not like the storm will swallow you whole.” Riley’s eyes didn’t meet hers. They were fixed somewhere beyond the elevator walls, staring into nothing, yet seeing everything. “I… I can’t stop seeing him like that,” she murmured, her voice trembling. “I can’t… I can’t believe someone could do this.
