A soft knock on my door made me jump. "Z? It's me." Riley. I stood up and opened the door slowly. Riley stood there in her pajamas, mascara smudged under her eyes. "Can I come in?" she asked. I nodded and stepped aside. Riley walked to the window and stared out at the falling snow. For a long moment, she didn't say anything. "How long?" she finally asked. "Riley, nothing happened. I promise." "But you wanted it to." She turned to face me. "I saw the way you looked at him, Z. I'm not blind."

They dragged me against my will, throwing me into a room and shutting the door behind me. “Let me out!” I yell banging on the door, unable to carry on for much longer. He let her arms go, and she grabbed his neck as the two of them panted heavily within the janitors closet at school. Beep...beep...beep... That man is strung so tight that he’s made my best friend doubt herself and I’m done sitting by and watching it. As soon as I leave Quinn’s office, I head straight to Emerson’s. I knock and don’t wait for a response before barging in. He’s in a meeting with Clint. “Riley, is everything okay?” my mate asks, jumping up.

Chapter 12 Inside the quiet room, the heavy silence crept back in. Riley walked over to the side of the bed, her body still trembling slightly from the leftover adrenaline of her fight with Ashton. She looked down at Iris, who had already drifted back into a light sleep. The anger in Riley’s veins quickly cooled, leaving behind nothing but a hollow, terrifying emptiness. She collapsed into the hard armchair, burying her face in her hands. The crushing weight of her reality pressed down on her chest until she could barely draw a breath.
