In time she opened up because she had no threat of a romantic connection from me and she told me everything that happened to her. It took four years but she still opened up and now I really do feel like she's my sister. She told me about you too last night and she's really afraid to go back to Aurora with you," he said. I opened it to find Riley standing at the bottom in a pretty dress, her eyes filled with hurt. "Do you really think I meant to do that today?" Her lip quivered. Damn. "No." I reached down and grabbed her hand. "Come here." She walked up into the trailer and sat down in the first seat she came to, crossing her hands in her lap and watching me. I felt like a different man around her, one that wanted to give a shit about life, about people, about her.

The rain outside had turned to a low steady drum against the motel roof. Inside Room the air was thick heavy with sweat sex and the sharp metallic scent of too much want. We’d barely rested maybe fifteen minutes of heavy breathing tangled limbs and lazy fingers tracing sticky skin before the hunger came roaring back. Riley moved first. She pushed me flat on my back in the center of the king bed legs spread wide knees bent feet flat on the mattress. POV: Ray The footsteps came up the path behind me and I turned around, and Riley was standing ten feet away in the orange light of the path lamp, and everything I thought I had prepared to say in the event that any of this unraveled just stopped existing completely. I had seen her in a lot of versions by now. Controlled and precise at a media meeting. Furious in a hallway after a game. Unguarded on the ice at two in the morning, her voice low and honest in the quiet. Fighting for breath in a concrete stairwell while I stood there not knowing what to do with my hands. In every version there was something underneath the surface, something running alongside whatever she was showing the room.

Riley sighed heavily and turned her head to look at Damien where she found him already gazing at Zia's vanishing figure. Tears were burning in her eyes as she got away from that place. Her feet continued to stride. She wanted to be far away from that place, from that place before she would badly lose it. Yes, she was insecure, she was jealous and she couldn't help it. She couldn't control her emotions, especially when it involved him. Zia had gotten attached to him so badly that even just the mere thought of sharing him with another person in any way had started triggering her terribly.

Just a man sitting inside the warm limo, yet he looking in worse shape than she does. Faye’s chest tightens. She’s seen Riley in all kinds of moods—quiet, distant, angry, calm. But never like this. Never this... raw. He’s always been the type to keep it all inside. To act like nothing touches him. Like weakness is a dirty word. Even when things get bad, he never lets it show. But now? He’s not hiding it. Not even trying. Faye feels her nails dig into her palms. She didn’t think Riley had this kind of emotion in him. Not for Amanda. Not for anyone.
