The Goodbye He Never Saw Coming
A woman comes out of nowhere, breathless and frantic, and hooks her arm through mine like we’re long-lost lovers.
“Please,” she whispers, “just pretend we came together. It’s an emergency.”
I freeze.
What the…?
She’s a stranger. A sweaty, unhinged stranger with desperation dripping from every pore. And yet, something in her voice stops me from pulling away.
“Who are you?” I mutter under my breath.
She doesn’t answer. Just clings to me like her life depends on it.
I let her. Why? I don’t know.
Maybe it’s her eyes. Maybe it’s the way she’s clearly on the verge of something... a breakdown, a breakthrough, who knows. Maybe I just feel like watching the storm.
