Zane's pov Emma and I were on our way to the Swan Inn for a viewing. Thankfully, the date we wanted was available, and the owner had told us we could come by early in the morning. As we pulled up, I could not help but stare at the building. It was just as breathtaking as the photographs, and just as my parents had always described it. “Are you all right, love?” Emma asked, reaching for my hand. “Yes… I just feel overwhelmed being here,” I admitted, glancing at her.

"Please tell me everything." The bed creeks as she moves closer with a thrilled smile. I sit more upright as I listen to her excitedly recount how King Ethan once went out to heal a dying family in the northern part of the kingdom and returned carrying his injured mate in his arms. My heart begins to pound harder with anticipation as she reveals that Emma was falsely accused of murder by King Ethan's girlfriend and was sent to prison to await her execution. I should feel angry at this point, but instead I feel excited by all the deadly troubles she is saying Emma went through. It's like I wish she never survived now that she has turned out more successful than me.

And then the screen flickered again. Another video began to play—a new one. This time, it wasn’t Ryan in the frame. It was Emma. She sat in the back seat of a car, her eyes hollow, her face streaked with tears. The camera shifted, revealing a figure next to her—a man, faceless in the dim light. His voice, low and haunting, whispered, "Are you sure you want to do this?" Emma’s voice cracked as she replied, "I need to teach her some lessons."

“Miss Emma’s phone was last active two hours ago.” “Where?” “At the Swan family residence.” Alex’s blood seemed to stop flowing. His eyes darkened. Without another word, he slammed his foot on the gas pedal. The car sped toward the Swan residence. And this time— Whoever dared to lay a hand on Emma, Would pay the price.

"But it was touch and go for a while." The waitress approached, and I ordered a moon-lily martini, needing something stronger than water after my day. "Wait," I said, suddenly registering Emma's presence. "How are you even here? I thought travel between pack territories was restricted during the festival." Emma's cheeks flushed slightly, her gaze dropping to her drink. "I got a ride." Ruby grinned mischievously. "With her boss." "Daniel Crawford?" I asked, surprised. The last time Emma had mentioned him, she'd been hiding in her parents' bathroom, mortified by her mother's matchmaking attempt.

“Actually, it is. I’m the Luna of this pack, and you will answer my questions.” Emma bristled, her lips pressing into a thin line, but she quickly realized that all eyes were on her. The other wolves were waiting for an answer too. She forced a small smile. “I was near Damien’s old Pack House when I heard he had left. So I came searching for him.” Raven’s inner wolf growled, and a wave of unease crawled down her spine. Every instinct inside her rejected Emma’s presence. “I do not like this woman. She’s lying. I can feel it.”

“Except the corpses are still breathing.” Emma leaned back, heart heavy. “And what happens if he succeeds?” Sarah didn’t answer right away. Then she said, “Then nothing happens. Ever again.” --- That night, Emma stood outside, staring up at the moonlit sky. Snow had started to fall. Not softly. Not naturally. Each flake seemed to shimmer with meaning—like it had been crafted. She looked at her hand. The Ember still pulsed within her, steady… but tired. They had fought one infection.

Sam. Ronan’s eyes snapped up, “Answer it, keep him on the line.” Emma swallowed hard and pressed the button. She put the call on speaker. “Sam.” She said, keeping her voice steady. A slow chuckle echoed from the other end, “Ah Emma, I was beginning to wonder if you missed me.” Her fingers tightened around the phone, “We’re done playing your twisted games, I’m coming to get my kids.” Sam laughed, the sound low and mocking, “That’s adorable and tell me, dear Emma, just how do you plan to do that?”
