Just finished a reread of the first chapter, and it's all about setup for the Losers' Club, but we don't meet them yet. The opening is entirely from Georgie Denbrough's perspective, a six-year-old kid chasing his paper boat down the street on a rainy day. He meets Pennywise the clown in the storm drain, who of course is the real main character of the whole thing. It's a brutal, efficient introduction to the town of Derry and the monster that lives there.

So, technically, the 'main characters' in that first part are just Georgie and Pennywise. But the chapter does something clever—it introduces Bill Denbrough, Georgie's stuttering older brother, through Georgie's thoughts and the act of building the boat. Bill's grief over Georgie's disappearance later is the engine for the whole Losers' Club. The first chapter feels almost like a prologue, a horror short story that establishes the stakes before we jump to the kids as teenagers. Pennywise's whole 'they float' bit still creeps me out more than anything else in the book, honestly.
