Classes were pretty normal, boring but normal, taking notes having tests, but boring none the less. On the weekends, I would go out to the bars with Jade and go on little shopping sprees. Homecoming came and went. Alex came to visit then to see how we were doing and of course he dragged us to the football game, he asked about our boyfriends, and I could sense that he was trying to see if I was okay with the long-distance thing, but he never said a word about it. He left us with a little extra money and said he would see us when we came home for thanksgiving. Jade and I were planning our Halloween out, doing a little bar hopping. Jade wanted to be a sexy marine, I chose to be Elvira, I've always loved how she dressed.

Halloween was finally here and we were dressed up at our bests heels and everything. Jade even bought high heeled combat boots to complete the look. We started to pregame when the doorbell rang. It was a few people that we invited to go out with us: Eva, she was a firefighter; Brice dressed as an angel, Chase was Caesar and we invited Jake, he was well dressed as himself… a vampire, but he looked good, the one day of the year he could bare his fangs and no one would run away screaming. We drank a little before we hopped the drunk bus to the pace. What I hadn't realized were how many vampires were really here, some of them I thought I'd seen before. Twins walked up to me they looked really familiar to me. "Hello Autumn, I'm Alexis and this is my twin Haiden, my brother tells us he's been seeing you. He also tells us that Jaiden is watching you, so we thought we'd see what it's all about."

"Tristan didn't tell me he had two more siblings or that they would be in town. Yes, it is true that Jaiden was here, but I haven't seen him since Tristan was here the week before class started, though I do believe he has people watching me. I'm not too worried about it."

Haiden decided to put a thought in "Well we're around to make sure that little miscreant does nothing stupid, and the bonus is that he has no idea what we look like because he has no clue what we exist. In the event that we can't be around your friend's boyfriend Dominic will be watching out for both of you."

"What? You mean that Dom is a vampire too? How did I not notice this?"

This time it was Alexis' turn "You don't know because he is really good at hiding his existence, your friend doesn't even know he's a vampire, but I'm guessing that is for her safety and she'd probably think he was nuts." I laughed when she said that because that is something Jade would definitely think.

"Okay I see your point with Jade and why would he tell me something he wouldn't tell her. So I bet you're wondering why I'm hanging out with Jake then?" The twins nodded in tandem. "I went to high school with Jake we used to be friends.. not close ones but friends none the less. I thought it would be nice to catch up I know he's trying to find a weakness to tell Jaiden about but the only one he's found thus far would be my brother and Tristan so I'm good on that front. Plus, when I go home, Tristan will be teaching me some things. How long will you two be here? Do you have a place to stay?"

They nodded no and I offered to let them stay in the basement guest rooms we have, they're goal is to keep me safe from one brother for another brother; I have a feeling that shit will hit the fan. That night seemed to go by too quickly. It was fun, though I think Jade had a little too much to drink but all she suffered was a minor headache the next day.

The next afternoon the twins were out roaming around campus, for whatever reason they could possibly have. I got a call from Tristan, we hadn't talked in the past few days because we've both been busy in our own right. "Hey"

"Hey, sweetie, how are you? How have you're classes been?"

"They have been okay. I miss you like crazy which just seems to make all my classes boring. Well it was boring here until last night when I met the twins, I didn't know you had other siblings" there was a silence on the other end of the line like he was contemplating his answer.

"Yes, though it is not a well-known fact, in fact I just told my little brother that he had other siblings; he's in shock as it were; I bet he's probably looking for them right about now."

"That shouldn't be hard I can see the family resemblance to you. They both have the prettiest gold eyes and light brown hair. However, why are they looking out for me? Did you know about Dom?"

"They're doing me a favor; sorry I didn't tell you I just didn't have the time with trying to figure Jaiden out. Yes, I did know about Dominic but not until I met him, we talked about it and everything he just wants to keep Jade safe as I with you. Sadly, my dear, I have to get going, I will talk to you later." We hung up the phone, I missed him more than I ever thought I would miss anyone before. I couldn't wait to get home for thanksgiving break! Three more weeks, the countdown had started.

The twins walked around campus with no real goal in mind, they knew if they were around long enough they would run into something. Walking around Western didn't take too much time, at least if you stayed near where all the classes were. They passed Thompson Hall and were making their way to the north quad when they were spotted. It was a vampire, she didn't exactly scream it but it was obvious to the twins. She had the grace of a big cat, never missing a step. She was closing in on them; she must have been looking for them; without any notice, she swung at Haiden, landing a blow square on his chest, making him stumble a few feet Al.exis returned a blow that landed in her face, knocking her over causing the twins to restrain and question her.

"Why were you looking for us, this is what you were doing, right?" the vampire grumbled but said nothing forcing the twins to take her someplace private to get some answers out of her. She started screaming but it was too little too late Alexis had a plan in mind and she had every intention of following through on it.

They finally were in the back yard of Autumn's house but didn't take her inside, they took her in the Garage and chained her to the wall. She started to realize that the twins were making a plan just by looking at each other, then and there she started to talk, not to give away anything they didn't ask but her name was of no consequence it wasn't worth them not knowing. "My name is Corin in case you two were wondering" Corin sneered.

As if they had forgotten she was there, the twins looked up at her with eyes that could have bored through her soul, had she not sold it so long ago. She couldn't have anticipated what they were planning to do, and yet they spoke calmly to her and hadn't hurt her, at least not yet. "Why are you here? Keep in mind anything we think you're lying about you will lose something dear to you". Haiden smiled as his fangs sprang from his gums. He looked more menacing now than he had when she was following the twins, she could see they were twin terrors in hiding, nothing to be messed with, but it's not in her nature to do things the easy way, so let the games begin.

"I'm watching all vampires that come in and out of Autumn's house. It was a boring job until you two came meandering out of the house today."

Alexis had her turn next, only she looked fiercer then Haiden and Jaiden put together, Corin would have to watch her very closely. "Why are you watching for vampires coming in and out of this house? Is it some kind of death wish or has that little brother of ours trying to find out something about the inhabitants?"

She wasn't sure how to answer that question it seemed like no matter how she answered that question Alexis planned to hurt her anyway, luckily for her she was used to torture courtesy of Jaiden. "I'm sure you know that I'm here because of the youngest one of your clan, he's looking for his siblings, though he probably never thought to look with the one human he wants to acquire to piss off his big brother. Little did he expect to find that he had two big brothers and a big sister. This is going to be a fun game".

  • First Bite   Epilogue

The candlelight flickered incessantly in the meticulously drawn circle that Autumn had outlined with ash and salt, its warm glow casting dancing shadows against the worn walls of her grandmother’s ancient ritual room. Outside, the soft spring wind rustled through the newly budded branches of cherry trees, creating a gentle, melodic sound that felt almost like a whisper. Meanwhile, inside the sanctuary of her past, the Veil waited and listened with an almost sentient presence.Seated cross-legged on an intricately woven mat, Autumn surrounded herself with a collection of ancestral artifacts—delicate bones that spoke of forgotten lives, smooth stones imbued with ancient energy, vibrant feathers from elusive birds, and the softly breathing Book of the Veilwalker, its pages fluttering as if sensing the charged atmosphere. The remnants of the Hollow fire still etched traces on her skin: a faint silver burn that curled around her collarbone like a serpent, and a tattoo-like mark of dark thr

The estate was silent.Too silent. Not the kind of silence that comforted, but the kind that watched—breathing behind the walls, listening through the floorboards. It wasn’t absence. It was attention.Autumn descended the grand staircase, her bare feet cool against the stone. Each step echoed louder than the last, until even her breath felt like a trespass. The pendant at her throat no longer glowed. The Book—keystone of all things hidden—sat unmoving on its pedestal, closed and unreadable. Somewhere beyond the garden wall, a wind howled once and died mid-cry.The world held its breath.Tristan met her in the parlor, a shadow amid lamplight. He wore no shirt, only a dark pair of linen pants that clung to his hips like silk. His chest was bare but not unmarked—etched with ancient sigils drawn in salt and ash, a protective rite older than the bones beneath the house. He hadn't needed it in centuries. But tonight was different.“You feel it,” she said, her voice barely more than a breath

The mirror stopped smiling first. Autumn shattered it anyway. The council met at midnight, deep beneath a hollowed-out basilica carved into the earth. Pillars wrapped in ivy framed a long obsidian table. Around it sat the supernatural elite—witches, vampires, spiritwalkers, and those who had survived too many blood moons. Autumn entered last, her pendant glowing. She felt their eyes on her, weighing her, testing the limits of what she had become. Tristan was at her side. Jade and Dominic sat across the chamber, both pale and serious. Jade’s power pulsed in waves, laced with something new—panic barely contained by bone.Autumn spoke first. “I saw Mara.”Whispers erupted. One of the elders, an albino vampire with no eyes, leaned forward. “The Hollow is waking.”“She tried to pull me under,” Autumn said. “She’s inside the veil.”“No,” Jade said softly. “She’s beneath it.”That silenced the room.“What does she want?” asked Dominic.Autumn’s voice barely rose. “Me.”---Later, in the quie

The heavy side doors of the cathedral crashed open, allowing Autumn to surge into the bitter cold of the night. Her breath emerged in sharp, frosty clouds, each exhale crisp in the frigid air. Just behind her, Tristan raced to keep up.“Autumn—wait!” he called, his voice laced with urgency. She whirled around to face him, fury and betrayal sparking in her hazel eyes. “You knew!”“I didn’t agree to the announcement,” he replied, his tone defensive.“But you knew they would do it!” She shouted, her words reverberating off the stone walls of the empty lot, starkly contrasting the stillness around them. “You let them bind me to you without my consent!”Tristan clenched his jaw, frustration etched across his features. “The bond was already there. They only made it visible.”“That doesn’t make it right!” she retorted, anger coursing through her veins. An oppressive silence hung heavy in the air, thick with a mix of power and panic. Suddenly, a sinister whisper curled out of the shadows: “Ru

The invitation arrived bound in black silk and sealed with crimson wax, featuring a symbol stamped into it: a crescent moon caught in a serpent’s coils. Autumn's name was elegantly inscribed in silver ink. There was no return address, no sender.Tristan stared at it, as if it might explode.“You’re not going,” he said firmly.Autumn arched an eyebrow. “That’s not your decision to make.”He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply through his nose. “Autumn… this is Jaiden’s seal.”She paused for a moment. “Then I absolutely have to go.”---The masquerade took place in an abandoned cathedral outside Chicago, now restored to haunting opulence. Candles floated mid-air, and crimson velvet draped the walls. A slow, ancient waltz pulsed through the space like a heartbeat.Autumn entered alone. Her mask was silver with veined onyx lace, and her gown—a deep emerald satin—hugged her curves as if it had been tailored for seduction. Beneath her collarbone, her pendant pulsed.Minutes later, Tristan en

The Mirabella Estate loomed before her, a grand relic of a bygone era, its timeworn stones draped in thick, clinging ivy and shadowed by the encroaching dusk. Through the dimly-lit windows, flickering amber light emitted an eerie warmth, but behind the glass lay secrets that pulsed with an ancient energy, concealed from the world outside.Autumn stood frozen at the wrought iron gate, her fingers curling around the chilled metal, feeling both the weight of its history and the frigid air of the approaching night. Beside her, Tristan remained silent, his presence a solid wall of unease. His discomfort was palpable—she could sense it in the stiff tension of his jaw and the protective brush of his hand against the small of her back, as if he were prepared to whisk her away at a moment’s notice should anything go awry.“It’s just a house,” she murmured, attempting to dispel the growing anxiety that settled like a heavy fog around her.“It’s never just a house when it remembers blood,” Trist
