The Beta’s Unwilling Bride
“You don’t want that hanging over Frostbane. Rivals would laugh, the moon goddess would turn her back. Let her have her life. We have ours.”
The room falls quieter. She reaches over to the nightstand, picking up a small ceramic cup filled with a steaming liquid. She holds it out to me, her movements careful. “Here. Drink this. It will help you relax. Ease the tension.”
I take the cup, my hands steady but slow, and bring it to my lips. I don’t ask what it is, I just gulp it all down in one long swallow. It’s warm, with a herbal taste, slightly bitter but not unpleasant. I hand the empty cup back, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. “Thanks.”
