It began with a faint whisper, then a drifting sensation at the back of my mind that at first I told myself that it was only exhaustion, maybe the nerves, only the emotional weight of losing everything I had schemed for, but the whisper grew, not louder exactly, but deeper, like a tremor beneath the soil you don’t truly feel with your feet but with something older, more instinctual, the kind of instinct wolves were born carrying in their bones long before they ever learned to speak or shift or kill, and as the night dragged itself into the early hours of morning, I realized, with a sickening twist of dread, that the whisper did not belong to me at all.
