“You’ve got this,” he said, patting my back.
“You were on the phone with Jace?” I asked the obvious.
He nodded and chuckled, saying, “The bastard’s birthday is tomorrow.”
Jace’s birthday party has always been the loudest in the state for as long as I can remember, and every year, it gets even louder. I didn’t know how the last two celebrations were because I was at the university and I didn’t care to check up, and since I’ve been back, I haven’t asked. It seemed as though he would throw a big party—perhaps not as loud as before, but something that would be the talk of the town for weeks.
