Charles heard Emma screaming and came running from his room, shouting loudly, “Emma, Emma, what’s wrong?” He quickly held her and saw that she was about to fall on the floor, with several big blisters on her swollen and red feet. Crying hysterically, she said, “I tried to take the kettle from the fire quickly to get ready to leave, and accidentally dropped the kettle of boiling water over my feet. It hurts so much I can’t walk. Charles, I'm sorry… " Emma cried out.

Eventually, Amelinda grew impatient and began to pass out presents again. When one landed on him, he opened it quickly and smiled wickedly. “Sweet!” He extracted a pair of all black Chuck Taylor’s; the only color was white stitching. “Thanks, Mr. and Mrs. Richards.” Charlie nodded. “Of course, James,” said Esmeralda. “Like you needed some more,” complained Eliza over his shoulder. “Hey now,” James chided her, “I can never have too many Chucks.” She rolled her eyes as presents were continually passed out.

“Nothing worth dissecting. Just… clearing the air.” Charles wasn’t satisfied with that. I felt it in the way he kept glancing at me, waiting for more. But I wasn’t in the mood to be poked, prodded, or manipulated. Not today. “James really likes you,” he said finally, watching my reaction. I kept my face neutral. “So he says.” “I think he’s good for us,” Charles added. “A partnership with the Cartwrights would stabilize everything.” “Mhm.” “You know, if you play this right, you could—”

Might be worth paying attention to. Charles comes back out in a green Navy SEAL t-shirt and brown chinos, boots laced properly, and I can't help noticing that his legs are slightly bowed, and that this gives him a stance that is, against all reasonable expectation, extraordinarily attractive. I look away and follow him out the door. He makes jokes the whole way down the street. Mostly about painting, technical jokes that I understand and find funny because I paint too. I laugh until my eyes water at one about impasto technique that I will not be able to explain to anyone who wasn't there.

Charles asked as he crouched down in front of me. I sucked in a breath in surprise at his sudden and very caring action as I watched him inspect my feet. Without even looking, I could tell that there were more than a few blisters on my feet right now. I wasn’t sure if Charles would be able to tell in this darkness though. “Yeah, walking in heels all day wasn’t a great idea today and I’m paying the price for that dearly,” I said before trying to laugh it off. “I don’t think you need to bear the pain or put up a brave front. It’s probably best that you don’t take another step in these shoes,” Charles said as he looked up at me.
