“I mean, books lie. People lie. Experiments fail all the time.” Jane nodded immediately, stepping in like she always did when things got too heavy. “Exactly,” she said firmly. “You are not alone in this. We are going to find out more. We are not jumping to conclusions based on one creepy science diary.” For a moment, Jayden’s breathing eased. Just a little. Then Jane went quiet. I looked at her sharply and saw that distant look in her eyes, the one she got when her mind was racing ahead of the room. She tapped the edge of the book once, twice, then lifted her gaze back to Jayden.
