Finished rereading that part last week, and it's kind of brutal but fitting, I think. By the end, Jiang Cheng is left pretty much alone, running Lotus Pier and raising Jin Ling, which is what he always said he was going to do. But you get the sense he's just going through the motions, you know? The guy lost his whole family and his brother twice, and even after they sort of reconcile, Wei Wuxian rides off with Lan Wangji. Jiang Cheng's ending is him standing on the docks watching them leave, again. He's got his sect, his status, but the narrative makes it painfully clear he's isolated in a way Wei Wuxian never will be. It's not a happy ending for him at all, but it's not like a redemption or a comeuppance either—it's just him, stuck with the consequences of every choice he and everyone else made.

What gets me is the clarity he gets in the extra chapters, realizing how much of his own misery was self-inflicted, that Wei Wuxian didn't actually abandon their bond. But the knowledge doesn't really free him. It just adds another layer of regret. He's not villainized by the end, but he's not exactly absolved either. The story leaves him in this permanent, bitter state of having everything he thought he wanted and nothing he actually needed.

Mdzs isn't subtle about it—Jiang Cheng is the human cost of Wei Wuxian's heroics. He starts as this vibrant, prideful heir, all fire and loyalty, and the plot systematically strips him of everything that makes him Jiang Cheng until he's just a walking monument to loss. His family, his home, his core, his reputation, even the relationship he defines himself by. He's the anchor to the 'real world' consequences the story needs; when Wei Wuxian's principles soar into the abstract, Jiang Cheng is the guy left burying the bodies and paying the bills.

What's fascinating is how his role shifts post-sunshot. He becomes the primary antagonist for a huge chunk, but not out of malice—out of duty and a twisted, corroded love. He's the living ghost of Yunmeng Jiang's past, policing Wei Wuxian's legacy because he's the only one left who remembers what it cost. The final act reduces his role to resolving that central theft, the core secret. His function is to force the narrative to finally account for everything sacrificed in the name of saving one person.

I feel like Jiang Cheng's role is way more than just the angry sect leader we often see on screen. He's the living embodiment of the story's central cost—the price of loyalty, pride, and the fallout from impossible choices. He wasn't just Wei Wuxian's brother, he was his mirror; where WWX chose to defy the world for his principles, JC chose (or was forced) to uphold his clan's legacy, even if it meant turning his back on that brother. His entire life becomes this monument to loss, holding onto Sandu and Zidian long after the person he shared those memories with is gone.

Honestly, his ending always guts me. He's not a villain, but he's not a hero you root for in a traditional sense either. He's the guy who did everything 'right' by society's rules and got utterly ruined for it, while watching the rule-breaker he resents eventually find peace. That bitterness is crucial. Without Jiang Cheng's relentless, frayed-tether connection to the past, the story's emotional core about forgiveness and moving on wouldn't hit nearly as hard. His refusal to fully reconcile is what makes the reconciliation that does happen feel earned.
