His brado immediately wrapped around my stomach. "Are you happy?" he asked in the middle of our silence. "Yes. You? Are you happy?" "Too much." After that, we did not continue our conversation. Until I fell asleep. For every joy we receive, there is always a sorrow in return. Sadness always follows after joy. So sometimes, some people are afraid to be happy. Because they know... in the end they will only be sad. They know that after a little loss they feel, there will be a big sadness in return.

Losing Joy was a heavy blow for Damian, and the loss changed his life profoundly. One day, Joy suddenly disappeared without a trace. Josiah’s smile froze. “Uh… it’s not funny, is it?” He scratched his head. “My jokes are always lame.” Yet, Kelly chuckled because of what he said. Her smile was as pretty as it was under the starry sky that night. Josiah was startled and felt his heart clench. He was suddenly overwhelmed with sadness.

Every family has their own problems, even mine, but I can’t let that ruin my birthday. You’re my best friend, will you make me sad on my birthday?” “I’m sorry, Joy. You’re right, it’s your birthday today. I can let go of my problems for just one night.” “Yay!” Joy squealed. Dressed in black sequin gowns, our natural blond hair stood out, cascading down our bare backs in the halter neck dresses we had on.

Christiana stared at her. “I don’t even understand you anymore.” Joy smiled faintly. “That’s because you’re still thinking like someone trying to survive.” A pause. “I’m thinking like someone trying to win.” Silence. Heavy. Unsettling. Christiana’s voice softened. “What do you want, Joy?” Joy’s smile didn’t fade.

I answered, feeling a little cheeky. I was looking at her in anticipation since I didn't understand her words clearly. Her soft laughter revealed a mysterious sparkle in her eyes. "You know, some days, I just feel like I'm overflowing with joy," she said, her voice thick with emotion. I gave a nod as I understood the meaning. At times, joy can be too much, like a balloon about to burst.

I roll him over – actually, I prod him and he goes along with it, since I couldn’t physically overpower him if I tried – and lie on top of him. He brushes the hair out of my eyes as we stare at each other. “It’s going to be okay,” he repeats. “I know,” I lie. We kiss some more, and eventually make love. The entire time, I feel a struggle inside me, a battle between sadness and joy. Joy that I have him here with me now… Sadness that the moment will never last. When I come, I start to cry. He kisses away my tears, but he can’t kiss away the pain.
