The Bride He Bought
Before I can respond, Julian leans into the frame behind her, holding what looks like a slice of cake with a candle stuck in it.
“Happy birthday, Alera!” he shouts. “We were going to bake you something but we almost set the oven on fire.”
I laugh, actually laugh, for the first time all day. “I can’t believe you remembered, Julian. Thank you so much, you guys.”
Mauve grins. “Hush now, we’re doing this properly.”
Julian clears his throat dramatically. “Ready? One, two, three—”
And they start singing.
Completely off-key. Loud enough to make me cover my face.
