I pulled in, cutting the engine.

But then again … I’m not sure what I expected … a building site, a dump yard, a fishing boat, a sunny, well-guarded mansion? Jackson runs the Jeep straight through the locked gate and up to the crummy building. The warehouse appears to have been abandoned by the world — its windows are boarded, ivy is climbing up its sides like veins, and half the roof is sagging inward. An old storage facility, maybe. Now, just a trap with a cruel invitation. I step out of the SUV and instantly feel it in my gut — wrongness. Jinx hops out and immediately begins to sniff. The dog growls low in his throat, body rigid, tail raised.

My heart, which had just started to slow down, promptly tried to escape through my throat. Blond hair. Green eyes. A face currently twisted into an expression of utter, profound disbelief. Jax Ryder stared at me, his gaze flicking from my trembling form to the now-friendly, tail-wagging “hellhound,” and then back to me. “You,” he said, his voice flat. “Of course it’s you.” The giant dog trotted over and nudged Jax’s hand with its head, begging for pets. Jax scratched behind its ears without taking his eyes off me. “This,” he said, gesturing to the furry monster, “is Tank. My neighbor’s Labrador. He escaped again. He thinks anyone running is inviting him to play chase.”

The old dockyard smelled of salt and oil and the sour tang of old rope. Crates leaned against one another under a bruise-gray sky as if the wind itself had arranged them in awkward, defensive positions. The chain-link fence that guarded the yard had a rent where a truck could slip through at night, and that rent was where men like Mr. Jack liked to meet when they wanted to solve things quietly — or to make them worse.

He couldn't be. I parked a few feet from the entrance. There was an old rusty gate hanging half open. I suspected it had never fully closed in years. The junkyard itself looked like no living soul had crossed its path in quite some time. The cars there were impossibly old and falling apart. All of this would make it the perfect spot for a kidnapping. But… Alex wasn't here. It didn't matter how convenient the junkyard was. Ryan Quinn did not strike me as a man that would use this sort of location.
