He didn't want Aito knowing he had planted a bug on him. Aito nodded. “My brothers are hosting a masquerade party. They’re celebrating a huge contract they signed, so Kaito brought me here to find something to wear.” Haruto turned the mask over in his hand, already imagining how angelic Aito would look in it. “When?”

Mom rarely swore, but when she did, it was comedy gold. “Thanks, Mom,” I whispered, pulling away and sliding my white mask over my face. It was beautifully crafted: two silver wolves howling at the moon etched into the forehead, with thin black detailing that traced the cheekbones. The mask made me feel different—stronger, bolder. Like maybe I could fake bravery for one night. “I’m going to find Alpha and Luna Silvermane,” she said, squeezing my hand once before disappearing into the crowd. And just like that, the warmth of her touch vanished.

"First of all, you should cover your faces," Becca handed each of us a mask. It was made like the face of an animal. Maya's face was a leopard, Naya's face was a hyena, Becca's face was a rabbit and my face was a deer. "Why do I get to wear a deer? Why not a Lion?" I frowned, wearing the mask.
