The ceiling was open to the sky, and the morning sun was pale and indifferent. "Kaden..." Kael was slumped against the central pedestal, his charred hand trembling. His eyes had returned to their natural color, but they were wide with a vacant, shattered horror. He looked at the empty space where the Black Ledger had been—where the Baseline had stood. "They took her," Kaden said, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. He lunged toward the edge of the broken dome, looking out over the city. "The witches. The rift. They’re gone."

I whispered to Kade, unshed tears filling my eyes. I saw a look pass over Kade’s face and I knew he knew. I had just silently answered his question on whether Mary was my mate or not. “Well this changes everything.” Kade muttered under his breath. “Everyone Leave.” He commanded, using his second in command authority. “Gregor, you’ll be in charge of executing the plan to rescue lady Mary. If any hair on her body is harmed, you‘ ll be answering to me.” He growled out. The meeting hall quickly emptied and Kade walked around to ensure the silencing wards that had been put up in the meeting hall were still intact. The witch who had cast the wards, showed us how to detect them.

The bond between us is a live wire—panic and fury twisted together so tightly I can barely breathe through it. Theophilus doesn't move. Doesn't react. We made it back to Steele territory at dawn. Kade was dying. I felt it through the bond. Felt his life slipping away with every heartbeat that grew weaker. Fainter. Wrong. “Hang on,” I whispered against his forehead. “Please. Just hang on.” He did not respond. Could not. The wounds from my father’s undead claws were festering. Rotting. Death magic was eating him from the inside out. Elena met us at the gates. Her eyes went wide when she saw Kade. “Get him to the medical den. Now!”

“Kade.” “No.” His eyes flashed toward her. “You’re actually allowing this?” Her jaw tightened. “The council demanded action.” “And since when do we punish people before proving guilt?” Silence followed. Kade turned slowly toward the executioner still holding the ceremonial whip. “Put that down,” he said coldly. The man hesitated. “I said put it down.” There was enough Alpha blood in Kade’s voice that the executioner obeyed instinctively, lowering the whip immediately. The elder’s face darkened. “You are overstepping.”

I bask in it for a moment before I look up at him, giving my mate my full attention. “You’re very special. You know that?” he murmurs, running his fingers through my hair. “And I can safely say I love you, Jada.” “I love you too, Kael.” *** We headed back to the Discipline Pack the next day. It was heart wrenching to have to return back after such a nice break away from all the issues going on back home. Kael knew I wasn’t eager to leave, however, he’s an Alpha, and he can’t leave his Pack alone for long. I hope the Kael who struggles to deal with the rejection of his mother doesn’t come back. He’s doing well.

A female voice answered after the fourth ring, sending Thalia's heart stuttering. "Hi, I'm trying to get hold of someone " Theia stammered. "William Kade? Is he available?" Silence stretched across the line that was heavy and uncomfortable. When it continued for a few seconds, Thalia started to think the call had dropped. "I'm really sorry but Kade isn't available." The female voice finally spoke, tinged with sadness. "He was killed yesterday afternoon."

When I didn’t explain any further, Kade out a sigh. “Tell me why I shouldn’t kill you?” He stood up again, holding my gaze. “I’m already dead. You can’t kill what’s already gone.” My voice sounded flat now, and I meant every word. Kade walked over to the cart and began picking up different tools and placing them back down. “You know, I think we are going to play some more.” He picked up a paring knife. The overhead lights reflect on the flawless metal. “I didn’t take you for someone who likes to play with their food.” I muttered.

The red letters on the screen flickered. Then? They vanished. Titan was dead. The Fall of Kade Ayesha saw it the second it happened. Kade’s body tensed. His breath hitched. Because he knew.
