A bit late to get scared now anyway, she thought dryly. Satisfied that she was safe from observation, Katherine tried again to get under the fence. She shimmied in the soft earth, not caring that she would be covered in mud afterward. After all, her life was hardly a fashion contest. It was no trouble this time to get through and Katherine was on the other side in a second. She pulled her backpack through from the other side. She put her backpack on and rose from the ground, looking around her at the forest she was now in.

The afternoon sun beat down on the sprawling estate, turning the air thick and sultry as Katherine stood in the walk-in closet of their bedroom, surrounded by a sea of swimsuits and cover-ups. Her fingers trailed over the fabrics, hesitation knotting her brow. She wanted to look perfect for Vincent, irresistible, tempting, the kind of sight that would make his eyes darken with that possessive hunger she craved.

She looked up when she heard my footsteps and offered a small nod. “Good morning,” I said softly, forcing a small smile as I stepped further inside. “I brought breakfast.” Her lips curved faintly. “You’re very consistent.” I set the basket down on the table and instinctively glanced around the room. The bed was neatly made, the sheets smooth, the pillow seemed untouched. “Where’s Mrs. Reynolds?” I asked. Katherine sighed. She slipped a bookmark between the pages of her book and closed it slowly. “Collette went outside,” Katherine replied. “Said she wanted some fresh air. She also said she wanted to be alone.”
