It’s a brutal but brilliant entry point.

If that seems too heavy, 'The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea' is a bit more accessible, maybe because of its length and that chilling, almost fable-like quality. The contrast between the adult world of romantic longing and the kids’ cold, ritualistic cruelty is unforgettable. You finish it and just sit there staring at the wall. Either one works, honestly; you just have to be ready for his particular brand of psychological intensity.

Honestly, if you're just getting into Mishima, the temptation is to go straight for 'The Sea of Fertility' because it's his big, famous final work, but that's a marathon. I'd say the real gateway is 'The Sound of Waves'. It's short, incredibly beautiful, and feels almost like a myth. It gives you his lush prose and his obsession with purity and beauty without the heavier philosophical or political weight.

Then, if that clicks, jump to 'The Temple of the Golden Pavilion'. That's where you get the full, intense, conflicted Mishima—the beauty and destruction, the psychological torment. It's based on a real event, and you can feel him working through his own ideas about aesthetics and violence. After those two, you're ready to tackle the 'Sea of Fertility' tetralogy, starting with 'Spring Snow'. Starting with the epic right away can feel overwhelming, like trying to run before you can walk.

Trawling through Audible was a bit of a scavenger hunt for his stuff. I know for sure 'The Sound of Waves' is available, narrated by someone with a very calm, measured voice that actually fits the island setting. 'The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea' is also up there, though I found the narrator's attempt at the boys' voices a little grating.

What surprised me is the inconsistent availability. Some of his major works, like 'Spring Snow', are part of the 'Sea of Fertility' tetralogy and are definitely there. But some of his earlier, more niche essays or plays? Good luck. You'll probably have better luck with the big publishers like Penguin or Vintage for the main novels. It feels like his audiobook catalog is a work in progress, heavily favoring the novels people are most likely to assign in college courses.
