The key is using the right filters: sort by kudos or bookmarks, then add tags like 'Angst', 'Emotional Hurt/Comfort', or 'Mutual Pining'. Some authors really nail that suffocating, codependent devotion they have, the kind that leaves you staring at the ceiling at 3 AM.

Don't sleep on the 'alternate universe - modern' tag either, oddly enough. Some of the most emotionally charged fics transplant them into completely different settings, which strips away the apocalypse and just leaves the raw, messy dynamic. I mean, for a while I couldn't even decide if I liked them together romantically or just as this insanely intense platonic thing. It’s all trust built on a weird contradiction, right? Jonghyuk is this closed-off, hyper-competent regressor who’s seen every possible betrayal, and Dokja is the one reader who knows his entire story—past, present, and possible futures. The trust is almost pre-built from Dokja’s side; he believes in Yoo Jonghyuk as a character before he even meets him as a person. That’s a huge imbalance.

The conflict comes from that exact point. Jonghyuk has to learn to trust someone whose motives are literally incomprehensible to him for the longest time. Dokja’s actions look like random, reckless, or even traitorous gambles, but they’re calculated from a meta-narrative perspective Jonghyuk can’t access. So their fights aren’t about petty disagreements; they’re brutal clashes of fundamentally different ways of existing in the story. One operates on lived trauma and the other on narrative omniscience.

It gets super messy because that trust, once it does form, becomes the absolute bedrock. They become each other’s only true constant across countless regressions and scenarios. But the foundation is shaky—it’s not pure friendship, it’s this desperate, codependent reliance forged in constant crisis. That’s why it works so well for fanfic; you can push that dynamic to breaking point and it still feels true to canon.
