I looked at the two cream envelopes. "No," I said. "You haven't opened them yet." "I don't need to open them. I saw your schedule on my email" Harrison pulled out two chopsticks and handed me one. "Sit down." I sat. He served the food with the practiced efficiency of a man who had been eating in my kitchen for fifteen years and had stopped asking which container I wanted because he already knew.

But he just laughed louder, running straight toward the waiting car—toward a night I wasn’t sure I was ready for, but one I could no longer avoid. Outside, the first thing I noticed was the car. It wasn’t a taxi. It wasn’t even close. The sleek black vehicle sat calmly by the curb, polished and imposing, the kind of car that didn’t just arrive anywhere—it announced itself. My heart skipped uncomfortably. I already knew before I fully processed it. This was a Harrison car. Before I could retreat or even think of another excuse, the door opened from the inside. "Finding God and finally Sorrow --- all written by Jeremy Gloss himself," he finished with a smile as he glanced back to meet my threatening gaze. "You had these, huh. Sadly, the author died before these fictitious books were known to the world." Kai added.

Liam coughed quietly beside him, and I couldn't tell whether he was trying to hide a laugh or simply clear his throat. Harrison looked slightly uncomfortable. “Actually, I do have a copy of one of our constitutions in my library. It contains more details about the responsibilities and authority of the Luna Queen.” My eyes immediately brightened. “Really?” He nodded. “Give me a moment. I'll go get it.” Before I could respond, Harrison disappeared through another doorway, leaving me alone with Liam. Silence settled over the living room.

Harrison’s POV The county facility sat back from the road behind a chain-link fence and a sign that read DRIVE SLOW. I parked in the visitor lot at two-forty. My appointment was at three. I had two books in a plastic bag on the passenger seat. McCarthy’s Blood Meridian—a paperback Thomas had been slogging through at Claire’s house for six weeks and had told me flat-out he didn’t like but was going to finish out of stubbornness. And a hardcover on hand-cut joinery I’d taken off his nightstand when Claire had let me into her house last Sunday to collect it. She hadn’t asked what I was there for. I hadn’t told her.

I finally said vaguely. “I see.” Harrison nodded. “That’s why I prefer to live alone. Ginger snap?” He held out a plate of ginger snap cookies that I hadn’t even seen him prepare. I took one and munched on it, watching while he stood and disappeared into the hallway. “I take it you came about the Luna’s Bane,” he called. “Yeah.” I heard some shuffling of books. Harrison cursed a few times. Then, he returned with a stack of journals in his hands. He plopped them down in front of me, sending a plume of dust flying up into my face.

When my shift ended, I found myself walking toward the corner table where Kael sat, his laptop closed now, a book in his hands. I stopped short when I saw the cover. ‘Knot We Cannot Untie.’ That was the book he was holding. I can't believe that Kael would be reading one of Linda Lively’s books. “You read… this?” I said, the surprise evidently in my voice. Kael looked up, one brow raised. “Why? You think I only read racing magazines and bank statements?” I gave a small laugh. “Chill bro. It’s just… not what I was expecting ”

"My name is Harrison," he began, his voice barely a rasp. "Harrison Fabian. I am an attorney... or I was. I served as the personal lawyer for Alexander Hemsworth. The late Alexander Hemsworth." Harrison shifted in his chair, his oversized suit jacket bunching up around his neck as if it were trying to swallow him whole. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in weeks, his skin sallow and his wobbly head trembling with a frantic, internal vibration.
