The Mate They Threw Away
Whatever was walking around in Asher’s face, it was not Asher.
The thing raised its hand toward another cluster of cowering servants, kitchen staff, I realised dimly, some of them still clutching trays, and then four blades appeared, simultaneously, embedded in its neck.
Dominic’s knives. I recognised the curved design, the specific arc of their flight. Dominic was the only one of them who could throw with both hands at once, who could make blades sing through the air the way other people breathe.
The not-Asher went down hard, crashing into the blood-soaked floor with a wet, heavy sound, skidding several feet through the red and leaving a dark smear in its wake.
