“Both you and Maya got new men and dumped me like yesterday’s trash.” Keisha rolls her eyes. “Girl, please, look who’s talking. You and Nox dress like twins every time I see y’all.” I sigh. “I know.” Grandma Mabel laughs loud. “They do. They really do.” “I don’t know,” I say. “He always wants to look like we’re connected together at the hip or something.” Knox’s mom snorts. “He’s always been like that. Every girlfriend he’s had, he tries to dress alike. Forever wanted to be a twin or something.”

Knox, the family doctor of The Croce family, leaned against the cool, marble wall outside the operating theater, the muscle in his jaw twitching with impatience and disgust. He was trying his damnedest to drown out the sickening, relentless sounds echoing from the heavily sealed room, the unmistakable, primal noises of his boss mating ferociously with his wife Stella. It was gross, intrusive, and unprofessional, yet entirely characteristic of the compound's barbarity.

“Can you make yourself visible at least? I don’t enjoy talking to nothing, it makes me feel crazy.” Movement out of the corner catches my attention and I watch as Knox emerges. It’s almost as if he’s stepping through a door I can’t see. He’s not translucent. Not glowing or hovering the way you expect a ghost to be. He just is. Tall, lean, and heartbreakingly handsome in a rugged way. His clothes are casual, black ripped jeans and a baggy black T-shirt, but they look well-worn and frayed. I have the urge to go to him, to touch him.

“Every hour of every damn day.” Her cheeks flushed, heart aching at the tenderness in his voice. “Me too.” He sighed and sat on a padded bench, angling the phone so she could see more of him—legs stretched out, one hand raking through his hair. “I wanted to tell you something before you hear it some other way.” Vivienne’s stomach clenched. “What is it?” “Weston is throwing another party,” Knox said darkly. “I tried to bribe him to postpone it…but he’s dead set on keeping the pattern. Says people expect it now. So I made a deal with him.”

It was nice that Teddy and his wife were kind enough to send me a gift. Knox was at our door at the right time, at sharp 7 pm, wearing a formal shirt and pants that I told him to wear. He looked good in this formal attire. Honestly, he had a handsome face. He just needed a little decoration to shine. His back-brushed blond hair was that night’s decoration.

This is a lot. “Thank you.” Knox says smiling at them. His smile immediately disarms them and they smile to. “That wasn’t really a compliment.” Lisa says walking into the kitchen. “I always take it as a compliment. I think my height is my best feature.” He says looking at me for confirmation. “Girls this is Knox and old friend and this is his sister Olive.” I say ignoring him. “You’re pretty.” Lisa says to Olive when I finish making the introductions. “So she’s pretty and I’m tall. That says a lot.” Knox says and all three of the girls laugh at him. They excuse themselves and leave the two of us alone in the kitchen.

But Vanguard Holdings got to be kidding me. “They want a video call instead instead of face to face? Who do they really think they are?” I turned around heading to the bedroom and forgot how to breathe. Knox stepped out of the bathroom with steam rolling behind him. Water dripped from his hair, trailing down the strong lines of his shoulders, his chest, all the way to the single towel hanging dangerously low on his hips. My brain short-circuited. I’d seen him shirtless before—wolves shift naked, but this… this felt different.

My bangs fall over my forehead neatly and my hair is wrapped in the usual tight bun. I barely recognize myself without my glasses and usual oversized hoodie. “Wow,” Maya says from the doorway. “He's going to lose his mind when he sees you.” If only she knew. I grab my phone and small purse. “How do I look?” “Like you're about to break some poor guy's heart.” She smiles. “Go get him, Cass.” I slip out of the apartment before she can ask more questions. Knox is leaning against his car, scrolling through his phone. He's wearing dark jeans and a fitted black shirt that shows off his athletic build. His dark-brown hair is slightly messy and even that makes him more attractive.

Snow is currently out of town, and I do not have neighbors who knock calmly at my door like that. “I'll get the door,” I tell Liam, stuffing some popcorn into my mouth. I stall to the door, and peeped. I gulp. It's him. Of course it's him. Knox. He's dressed in a jean and shirt that's slightly rolled up, giving him this gangster look. His men got to him, and he showed up faster than I expected. I pull the door open and roll my eyes. “What are you doing here?” I say.
