Victor's smile wavered. "Well, that's unexpected."
I did not allow him time to recuperate. With a renewed feeling of purpose, I rushed for him, the target burning like a second heartbeat. The shadows recoiled as I neared, their motions becoming less assured.
Victor's eyes darkened, and with a flick of his wrist, the shadows merged into a gigantic, wolf-like figure. Its brilliant red eyes focused on me, and it growled—a deep, guttural sound that echoed across the cavern.
