I blew out a long sigh of relief at his departure. Fuck! Man! Larry was really a handful. He was obviously a lot to deal with whenever he got into those inquisitive situations. He keeps forgetting that curiosity killed the cat. I let my eyes roam back to the screen of my laptop, a folder catching my attention. I leaned in closer.

Slowly, my brows wrinkle, and I cross my arms. “This is closing hours, Larry. Sally isn’t around,” I say to him, but he chuckles, walking up to me. The smell hits me hard—a rancid stench of smoke that seems to cling to his skin, and I involuntarily take a deep breath, trying to hold back my disgust. Larry is a creep in his early thirties who knows my mother, and ever since my dad died and we went broke, he has vowed that he would be the one to marry me. Cillian has beaten him up once or twice, but it never seems to deter him.

I murmured under my breath. Mr. Larry, who had been quietly standing near the end of the table, gave me a small, knowing smile. “You’d be surprised how quickly gossip dies when people are paid well enough not to talk.” That made me chuckle a little despite myself. “You really think that’ll work?” He smiled. “It always does.” He stepped closer, his eyes softening as he reached for my hands. “May I?” I blinked, confused, but nodded. In Maverick’s handwriting, there was a note that read: “Does page 14 mean the data moves faster if you shorten the string? Let me know if I got that right.” I stared at the note, my heart feeling so light that I felt like a teenager again. I looked up at him, completely stunned. How does he have anything to do with you?” Larry asked like a curious child, and I sighed, sucking in my breath before exhaling.

LARRY: “That’ll melt half the country. We’ll get sponsors, investors, pity votes. And when the board starts leaning my way again… boom. I take back the company.” Anita scribbled it all down, her mouth tight. She didn’t like the way he was smiling. But she had learned long ago to keep her thoughts quiet around men like Larry. After Anita left, Larry stood in front of the mirror, straightened his collar, and took one last admiring look at himself. “Both women played their part beautifully,” he muttered. “Audrey, the little firecracker. June, the perfect fallen angel.” He raised his glass to the reflection.

Gerald insisted, as he held onto it so that Larry couldn’t watch Jeremy read the note. As soon as Jeremy nodded to Al, Al bopped Gerald on the head. “What did I tell ya?
