I stopped walking. I stood in the middle of the corridor with my keys in my hand and I listened. There it was again. That laugh. The one I had heard across dinner tables for twelve months when she was sixteen and something had struck her as genuinely funny — not the polite laugh she gave to things that were mildly amusing, the real one. The one that started in her chest and came out unguarded and full and was over quickly because she did not perform things, even laughter. I knew that laugh.

It was a laugh. A child’s laughter… My laughter…

Adrian’s friends moved faster than he did. One of them reached out and ripped it from my hand, ending the call mid-ring. Another laughed under his breath, like he’d just seen something absurd. “Seriously?” someone scoffed. “Your fiancée runs into a little trouble and the first thing she does is call her mommy?” Another chimed in, shaking his head with a laugh. “Adrian, this is next-level childish. We’re grown adults, not kindergarteners. What’s she going to do next—cry for a nanny?”

Then she found the scene unfolding and a laugh…small and incredulous…escaped her. Why the hell is she laughing?
