I blink at her like she’s speaking in tongues. Then I start laughing. One of those belly-born cackles that starts deep inside your stomach — usually right in the middle of a church service — and you’re not sure what exactly is so funny, but you just can’t stop. The kind that always ends in tears, a weird hiccup, or — heaven forbid — a fart. Some of the staff start laughing at me … definitely not with me. My laughter fades into some hiccup snickers. I focus on Sky’s face.

She was laughing so hard she almost peed herself. Claire had already stopped laughing, but Lexie continued. And then, her loud laughter slowly turned into soft sobs, until it became full-on crying. There was no reason to laugh when everything in my life made me cry either in pain, sadness, self loathing, or regret. I didn’t know laughing could make the stomach hurt so much, or make the eyes water. I found that last part the weirdest. Even laughing; such a positive and happy thing, can end up making you cry! Why is it that tears are always involved in both happiness and sadness? I found that really unreasonable and unfair. There should be no crying in happiness.

She fell to her knees on the asphalt, sobbing theatrically, putting on the performance of a lifetime. But inside? Inside, Aria Cross was laughing.

A low, broken smile slipped past my lips, and before I could stop myself, a laugh escaped my throat. At first it was soft, but then it grew louder. I bent forward slightly, one hand clutching my stomach, the other pressing against my head as laughter shook my body. “Hahahaha…” Tears spilled from the corners of my eyes as I laughed, the sound echoing in the empty house. I just kept laughing, my shoulders trembling, my chest aching as if the laughter was tearing something open inside me.
