I flipped through the pages until a page got stuck under my thumb but that was not made me freeze, the words that were once unreadable by me where now clear as day. Somehow I found myself understanding every word and the strange language feeling like I’d known it my entire life. “The cold ones” I read, the words written with very bold letters, I scanned the rest of the book my eyes widening as I read most of it. “They are the one that have defied death and come back to life but not with a beating heart” I read out loud. Somehow the words translated itself in my head before coming out as English words from my heart, I don’t even understand how that was possible.

“You’re high. There’s nothing to tell.” “Aha! Now I know you’re lying. You make that funny little half-laugh when you’re lying through your teeth,” I said. “Fess up. I want to know all the juicy details.” “Damn it, Lance,” Randell growled, shutting his book with an agitated movement. “Now she’s not going to stop until you tell her.”

That was all he said as he took his briefcase and made his way out of the house while I watched him leave helplessly. “I could be good for you.” I whispered in frustration and stomped my feet before clearing the table and dumping them in the sink. I spent the rest of the day as usual, stealing Nick's shirt and hiding it in my room so that I could fuck myself to it at night. When 6 PM struck, I got a text from Mom with a message that had me sighing in despair. Mom: “There's unfortunately too much work. I think I'll be home by midnight. Or in the morning. Take care baby, xoxo.”

The past few weeks had slowly started feeling less lonely because of them. Every evening after duty and my garden time, Sasha and Elena sat with me for hours patiently teaching me how to read and write while the twins occasionally joined in just to mock my pronunciation before secretly helping me anyway. It still felt surreal sometimes. A human sitting in the Alpha mansion learning English language from wolves. I turned through the previous pages slowly, smiling as I looked at the messy practice letters scattered across them. My first attempts had looked horrible, shaky scribbles that barely resembled words, but now I could at least recognize the alphabet properly.

The air felt thicker suddenly, my skin prickling like static electricity, but I shoved it down. No way was I showing weakness to these losers. Pride was my armor, and I wore it well. Lexi slid a small bottle of clear, fizzing liquid across the table toward me, his voice dripping with false sweetness. “Hey, Angel, don't be so uptight.
