“The union was inevitable. I will make the decree tonight. Whether he is present or not, the engagement, and the marriage, will take place. That will end this nonsense once and for all.”
I blinked, stunned. “You would force him?”
His silence was answer enough.
I took a step back, shaking my head. “Father, that isn’t wise.”
“Why not?” he asked quietly.
“Because forcing Arden has never worked. You can’t control him through politics, he’ll find a way to destroy everything in retaliation. And besides…” I hesitated, the words bitter on my tongue. “If you have to force him, then what kind of marriage will that be?”
