I nodded. It was not forgiveness exactly, not the clean and total kind. He nervously adjusts his glasses and wipes his sweaty forehead with his palm. He waves at me. "And finally, Reuben Ackerman our golden boy," she says with a tease. Reuben just stares at me blankly with a slight tick in his jaw. He seemed irritated. "Let's get ready for our tutoring session shall we?" He says as he walks to the board and cleans a section of it.

I knew I had just given a big long speech about playing grab ass in the official meetings but I could tell that Lucy needed consoling after the admission. What was worse was that Levi had a look about him that I could tell was not a good one. Levi was a pacifist at heart but when he became angered he was like a bull during a bullfight. Not even Ferdinade could make it after the first stab.

Lewis asked. “At least here,” she said, “people are honest about what they are.” Lewis frowned. Raised, maybe not rich, but definitely... important. Precise. Educated. And he was going to remember that. Soon. And when he did- He’d leave. *** That night, I couldn’t sleep. He had fallen asleep quickly, like always. Calm. Breathing deep. Like nothing had changed.

I still believe that.” Is this Lev’s first real flaw? I can’t agree with him that anyone can be rich in America. There are so many people who are so hopelessly poor with no way out. They kill each other just to get a chance at having anything at all.

"You want me to pretend to be your fiancée." Levi took a slow sip of his drink, his gray eyes never leaving her face. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass, the ice clinking softly against the crystal. "It’s a simple arrangement. You need a roof over your head, protection from the people who erased you, and eventually, the truth about who you are. I need a weapon."
