“At least here,” she said, “people are honest about what they are.”
Lewis frowned.
Raine continued. “Derek doesn’t pretend to be a good man.”
Lewis scoffed. “That’s not exactly comforting.”
“No,” she agreed. “But it’s real.”
Lewis leaned back in his chair, processing that.
“At least here,” Raine added, “you know what you’re dealing with.”
Lewis looked at her again.
“And that’s better?”
“For me?” she said simply. “Yes.”
