Incubus Reborn: Sleepless promise
She stirred the mixture until the steam stung her eyes, as though smoke might disguise the sting of her heart.
“You think this is about love?” she asked quietly.
“It is always about love,” Lucian said, wincing as he shifted. “Love for the people, love for justice… and perhaps, if fate is kind, love for me.”
The words hung between them, heavier than the scent of boiled herbs. Saraphina turned slowly, her eyes narrowing, but there was no true anger there. Only the exhaustion of someone carrying more than the world should demand.
“Fate has never been kind to me,” she said.
