She smiled and helped me into the car, leaving Maya standing there in shock as we drove off.
Two weeks later, I had settled in abroad. There were a few other students from back home in my class, and unexpectedly, I ran into my childhood friend, Jane Fay. She had been my neighbor back when my family lived in a large apartment downtown.
Her hair was tied up in a high ponytail, and she radiated youthful energy. She enthusiastically showed me around campus and introduced me to all her friends. Even after ten years apart, it didn’t feel strange at all. As a matter of fact, being with her felt comfortable and grounding.
