I turned the page, my eyes scanning the text. “This ability is the faint red light coming from the holder’s hands, a red transparent light surrounding the hand of the holder,” I read aloud, my voice filled with wonder. “This ability can burn anyone, capable of inflicting an incurable and excruciating pain. A kind of pain that will torture its victim.”

I saw a girl with golden wings get sliced midair, her body vanishing into ash before she hit the ground. "You have to fight, Lyra!" the Creator shouted, grabbing my arm. "Use the light! If the Reaper kills you, the High Council wins forever!" I looked at the monster. I looked at the people dying for me. I thought of Rowan’s howl and Leo’s tears. I wasn't just a survivor anymore. I was a weapon. And I was going to break every world this Council had ever made. I stood up, my silver scar beginning to glow. The golden wings burst from my back, twice as large as before. I flew into the air, heading straight for the Reaper’s chest.
