“The mines,” Elara whispered, her voice barely a tremor.
The mines. The very place I’d scoured earlier, empty-handed and frustrated. But this time, there was a difference. This time, there was hope.
With a silent nod of thanks to Elara, I crept forward, my hand instinctively reaching for the dagger strapped to my boot. The air grew thick and stale, the only sound the rhythmic dripping of water somewhere deep within the earth.
We reached the gap in the foliage, and there, bathed in the flickering glow of a single lantern, I saw them.
