Beyond it, through the thick iron bars, I could see the sky.
It wasn't the clean, false sky of the Apex, filtered through crystal domes. It was a bruised purple, choked with smog and dust. The wind that blew through the bars was hot and dry, carrying the taste of ash and distant fires.
"The Dregs," Viggo breathed. He leaned close to the grate, inhaling deeply. His nostrils flared. "It smells like... burning."
"It smells like home," Neoma said quietly.
