Snow clings to the branches like powdered sugar, and lanterns hang low, swaying gently with the breeze. At the center of the grounds stands a massive Christmas tree, tall and proud, decorated with crimson ribbons, glass ornaments, and glowing stars. Pack people gather around it in clusters, laughter rising into the air, cameras flashing as people pose with hot cups of cider in their hands. A wooden stage has been set up nearby, draped in festive cloth, clearly meant for speeches and performances. Music hums softly in the background, cheerful and light, almost too cheerful considering everything that has happened lately.

His replied flatly. “I know you did.” My fingers curled at my sides, but I didn't let my nervousness reach my face. “I found this Christmas tree in a store, it's so beautiful, and it's on promo. It comes with fifty percent off, but only till this week. I wanted to get it before—” There came the sharp scrape of the chair's leg against the floor as he turned. His gaze locked onto mine, cold enough to freeze me in place. “You are not buying a fucking Christmas tree in this house.”

A lady wearing a dark woolen cloak with flaming red hair asked, “What would you say to the creator?” I wipe my tears of laughter as I look her in the eyes. She is very pale, with gothic makeup and soulful eyes. I sense that I can be honest with her. “Well, first,it's brilliant. It reflects the dark side of this holiday. It was massive, glorious and very darn scary, but it acted like a kangaroo as it chanted something, clearly too busy to notice me. “It’s Christmas. You have to put up a tree.” I never got invested in the holidays. My family got together for Christmas dinner and exchanged a few gifts, but we didn’t make a big fuss about it. Christmas eve was the best night to pick up tail. Any woman in a bar on Christmas eve was depressed, and she fucked like being good in bed would fix all her problems. “Why?” She threw her arms down. “Because it’s Christmas. The ornaments glowed faintly like eyes watching us. And yes. Beneath the whirring sound of swirling magic, I could hear something else. A tune. A melody. A low, warlike hum that vibrated through the courtyard stones. I squinted at the tree. “It is singing.” “It is threatening us,” Lucian corrected. The branches shook once, as if agreeing.

“But you’re brave, and you’re strong.” “Thank you,” I replied with a smile. “I’ll take good care of my baby.” “Come, let’s make a wish under the Christmas tree. They say if you wish with all your heart, it’ll come true.” I followed them to the town square, where a towering Christmas tree stood. It was glittering with lights and ornaments. I closed my eyes, pressed my palms together, and made a heartfelt wish. “I hope my babies are born healthy and safe. I hope I can give them a happy future.”
