Chapter 40 I sat quietly for a few more minutes waiting for Bobby to come back into the room. Why didn’t dad want me to say anything to Bobby I thought to myself. Trudy made small talk asking random questions about school. I was getting sleepy, and I yawned. The atmosphere in the small kitchen turned dark and gloomy even with the sunrise shining through the kitchen window over the sink. Bobby came back and sat at the table putting a large bag down off to the side. He smiled at his mom, and they started to talk. When he came back his mug was empty and was going to poor a second cup. His mom didn’t stop him. I was wondering if the drug was just in my cup. Or did she poison the entire pot?

I ran my fingers through my hair, smoothing it, making sure everything looked right.

My voice was slow and drawn out. I had heard stories from my friends about being drunk. They said the feeling would go away in minutes if you didn’t drink too much. It seemed like I didn’t drink too much earlier. So I was confident that I would be sober in a moment. “Come on. Let’s find a seat,” he suggested. I nodded because sitting was exactly what I needed right now. “I’m Bobby, by the way.” Bobby introduced himself as he led me away from the crowd. I rubbed my temples as the slowly floating feeling turned into a headache.

"Don't you think I'd know whether Ms. Sanders has siblings? Where the hell would a nephew come from? You'll say anything to climb the social ladder, won't you?" He gestured to his men. "Bring me some liquor." One of his guys immediately handed him a bottle of vodka. Rex twisted off the cap, grabbed my jaw, and started pouring it down my throat. The burning alcohol seared my throat as I choked, my face turning bright red while the liquid spilled down my chin onto my neck and clothes. Rex's expression turned vicious. "Drink it! He said in a husky calm voice. I was about to say something until someone decided to interrupt. "There you are buddy! I was screaming the hell out of me but nobody showed up. And you're hiding in your room?" The man pointed a finger toward Artemis and said angrily. "Stop bothering me, Leo. Just get out of my house." Artemis sighed before pushing me behind him. What the hell is going on? Am I that ugly to get out of my room? "You've a riding match this afternoon bro. It's almost time. Get ready. We're gonna pick up Linda and Robert on the way." The man, Leo, checked his Rolex and said.

Little Bobby countered. "No, you said you would get me a wife, Bobby, but I didn't tell you it was going to get married now," Jason replied. "I am going to find you a wife, uncle, a beautiful one like my mummy," Little Bobby interjected. "Yes, I know Little Bobby; you've told me that countless times," Jason replied. "I just did." Little Bobby grinned, adding, "Can I wear the little groom suit and not Liam? I think the two of us can wear it," Little Bobby said until he exhausted his last breath.

"For Kate's year-end bonus this year, let's just give her 500 dollars to keep up appearances." My boss' nonchalant conversation with the accountant drifts through the half-closed break room door. I happily took him up on that, flew back to Coral Bay, and settled into my time off without a care in the world. I kept an eye on the calendar, but I wasn't anxious. I knew Jack's company wouldn't run into trouble for a few more days. The real problems would surface once their new projects got underway and all the funding gaps became impossible to hide. Tate drags my arm and leads me towards the counter; he starts to pour me a drink, and I ignore his extended hands. "Tell me what you want!" I say impatiently, unable to keep the anger from my voice.
