It would be so easy to chase that future. To anchor it. To demand it. Desire is leverage too. Time pushes the memory harder. I see a child running across wooden floors. I feel small fingers gripping mine. I hear laughter that has not yet existed. My chest tightens. I want it. God, I want it. And time knows. Because longing creates movement. Movement restores the circle. I let the memory burn without stepping toward it. I lower the axe carefully. I breathe. In. Out. My side aches again — the phantom wound reminding me that mortality is not theoretical.

I understood that look all too well—it was one that spoke of longing, of desire, and of a fierce need to protect a lover from any external threats. And it infuriates us to no end.

And it makes me stop breathing for a second because I can feel it, the emptiness she’s describing, like the echo of a room stripped bare. “Nothing made sense, you know,” she continues, and I hear the inhale she tries to pass off as steady but it trembles at the start. “There was frustration, annoyance… and at the same time there was longing. A deep, heart-wrenching longing. Like I was incomplete, and a part of me wasn’t with me.”

ZARA POV Stillness seized me as a tremor ran through my body. I wanted Samuel so much that it was almost a living thing, pulsing with rhythmic intensity through my veins. I was drenched in longing, and every fiber of my being was attentionally waiting for his touch. My skin screamed with goosebumps, expecting his caress. The very air rippled with vibrations, the silence pregnant between us; we both knew that the very destiny of our love hung in the balance.

It was a cry for love, for acceptance, for someone to see the beauty and worth in a soul that felt forgotten. I wished for a gentle touch, a reassuring smile, a listening ear. I wished for someone to hold my hand, to wipe away my tears, to tell me that everything would be okay.
