My hands shook a little as I placed the ring on his finger. "Now to share the flame." Stoic continued, but I had no idea what he was talking about. Stoic looked at Nate, and Nate gave him a nod. A permission to do something. I watched intently as Stoic placed his hand on Nate's chest and pulled out a purple flame from him. I had never seen such a thing. "This flame represents love, passion, life, and commitment. Now they will be tied, sharing everything in life." Stoic split the flame in two; they were much smaller apart than together. Stoic then shoved one half of the flame in Nate and the other in myself. I felt odd for a moment, just for one moment.

“It is the most extraordinary yet.” “Yes,” Sera said. “I was looking at it and I understood something about what I asked you yesterday.” She sat down. “Love is not just the motivation for the building. Love is the standard for the precision. You ask: is this precise enough for the person I am building for. And the answer is always: build it as precisely as the person deserves. And if you love them fully the answer is always: more precisely than this.” She held Sera’s gaze. “There is no upper limit on the precision because there is no upper limit on what the people deserve.”

The one that had caught her attention from the very beginning. “If either of us says ‘I love you,’” he read slowly, each word careful and deliberate, “the contract terminates automatically. No negotiation. No exceptions. No take-backs.” “I need to understand why,” she said. “Really understand.” He set down the contract. Leaned back in his chair. For a long moment, he was quiet. “Love changes things,” he finally said. “It creates obligations that contracts can’t define. Expectations that rules can’t capture. When you love someone, you start to need them in ways that can become… dangerous.”

All four creating structure that could serve either purpose depending on whether love was genuine or bonds were just fulfilling prophecy mechanically without authentic feeling making fulfillment meaningful instead of just technical. I loved them. Really loved them. Not because prophecy demanded. Not because divine design required. Because they were themselves. Because Liam's foundation anchored. Because Caleb's enhancement grew. Because Hunter's wholeness completed. Because Darius's transformation enabled. Because knowing them made loving them inevitable despite complications. Despite difficulty. Despite everything suggesting that loving was harder than just accepting bonds mechanically.

A feeling to care, assist, be passionate, compromise, support and hold unto. But then it turned to a choice. A choice to be patient, to not be arrogant, nor boastful, to bear and to hope for eternity with that someone, while still holding onto those unchecked emotions. He so passionately defines, sinking me into depths of it, I had no clue about.

Not that its expression changed. “You speak of love,” it began. “A necessary set of biological signals that express a selfless protectiveness. Many sentient species share this trait. For example, many mothers will protect their young from predators with their own bodies.” It looked away, off into some distance as it compiled the countless species that exhibited love. “Despite your natures, it appears that you also have this truly selfless trait,” Godeater continued. “Which now clarifies why you equate the deconstruction phase as that of destruction. It is lamentable.”

You have always been. Love is a vulnerability that can be taken advantage of. I responded, "Love is not weakness," with a forceful but slightly depressed tone in my voice. "Love is power. It offers us motivation, strengthens our will, and equips us to defend what is most important. Deucalion's face contorted into an evil grin.
