Kij Johnson's 'The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe' is a response to Lovecraft's 'The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath,' but from the perspective of a grown woman, a professor, trying to save her student. It takes the surreal, dreamlike geography of Lovecraft's Dreamlands and treats it as a real place with real consequences. The cosmic horror is less about screaming monsters and more about the vast, arbitrary rules of a universe built on dream logic, and the struggle for agency within it. It's a beautiful, thoughtful, and adventurous reclamation.

For a weird western twist, 'The Hunger' by Alma Katsu reimagines the Donner Party tragedy with a supernatural, possibly cosmic horror, twist. Something is stalking the caravan in the wilderness, driving them to madness and cannibalism.

While the entity is never fully explained, its influence feels ancient and malevolent, warping the landscape and the people in it. It ties the horror to a very real historical tragedy, making the supernatural elements feel grounded and even more terrifying. It’s a great example of grafting cosmic horror onto a historical framework.
